caelum aratro fiderunt, created by pennsylvania artist david cerulli, is a stainless steel and bronze statue situated along air products' outdoor walking path. the statue is a gift that was presented to air products in 1992 by former chairman and ceo dexter baker upon his retirement. it has been accurately described by a local newspaper as “a pair of 14-foot-high forms made of curling, jetting stainless steel, split and attached by a
16-foot cleaver of bronze, polished and sanded to simulate the mercurial nature of air currents and clouds.”
the sculpture's latin title, caelum aratro fiderunt, translates as “we cleave the sky”; loosely translated, it means “we do the impossible,” like separating and liquefying air and making it into useful by-products.
